SoftBank Group completed its OpenAI follow-on. SoftBank IR said that on Oct. 1, 2026, Japan time, SoftBank Group Corp. executed the third and final tranche of the follow-on — USD 10.0 billion (JPY 1,579.6 billion at the company’s stated FX of USD = JPY 157.96) — via SoftBank Vision Fund 2 into OpenAI Group PBC.
That closes the USD 30.0 billion follow-on SoftBank announced Feb. 27, 2026. SoftBank IR said the company’s cumulative investment in OpenAI now totals USD 64.6 billion, with an ownership interest of approximately 13%.
Funding was not a fresh bank draw. SoftBank IR said the third tranche was paid with proceeds from the foreign currency-denominated senior notes the company priced in a Sept. 24 disclosure — an offering SoftBank sized at about USD 11.1 billion (USD 10 billion of dollar notes plus EUR 1 billion of euro notes), with an expected issue date of Sept. 29 and stated use of proceeds that included the final $10 billion OpenAI payment plus general corporate purposes.
SoftBank also cleaned up the bridge. Effective Sept. 30, SoftBank IR said it canceled the remaining USD 10.0 billion of undrawn capacity under the USD 40.0 billion bridge facility signed March 27, 2026. After that cancellation and an early repayment disclosed Sept. 9, SoftBank said all borrowings under the bridge have been repaid and no undrawn commitments remain.
The October close matches the schedule SoftBank published in February: three $10 billion Vision Fund 2 closings on April 1, July 1, and Oct. 1, 2026, Japan time, against a disclosed USD 730 billion pre-money valuation for the follow-on. SoftBank’s February release said it had already put USD 34.6 billion into OpenAI through Vision Fund 2 since September 2024 before the $30 billion add-on.
This is the tranche completion story — not a bonds-tip rerun. SoftBank’s own IR now confirms the money landed and the stake figures SoftBank previewed in February.
SoftBank’s Oct. 1 release does not discuss OpenAI’s next fundraising or “circular capital.” Separately, Bloomberg reported Sept. 29 that OpenAI was in early talks to raise at least about $30 billion at roughly a $1.4 trillion valuation after delaying IPO plans; TechCrunch amplified that account and said OpenAI did not comment. Those talks are secondary reporting, not SoftBank’s claim.
Nvidia: OpenAI’s February round announcement said NVIDIA committed $30 billion alongside SoftBank’s $30 billion and Amazon’s $50 billion. SoftBank’s Oct. 1 IR does not mention Nvidia. Reports that Nvidia also closed a matching final $10 billion installment remain The Information–sourced and are not treated as SoftBank-primary confirmed here.
Stakes (sourced): SoftBank has term-funded a ~13% OpenAI position and retired the related bridge line as OpenAI’s last announced private round completes on SoftBank’s side. Whether OpenAI’s next raise — if Bloomberg’s early talks harden — keeps pulling capital from the same infrastructure-partner set is a question SoftBank’s IR does not answer.
