Apple on September 9 introduced iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone. The phone has a 7.6-inch inner display and a 5.4-inch outer display and is powered by the A20 Pro chip, Apple said.
The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 for 256GB of storage in the United States, according to Ars Technica, The Verge, WIRED, TechCrunch, CNET, and GSMArena. Apple’s Newsroom announcement did not include a dollar price.
Apple said pre-orders begin Friday, October 16, with availability beginning Friday, October 23. TechCrunch, The Verge, WIRED, and GSMArena reported that Apple announced the device at its fall event in Cupertino alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. The Verge reported that Duo goes on sale about a month later than those Pro models.
Opened, Apple said, iPhone Duo is the thinnest iPhone ever. Closed, the company said the 5.4-inch outer display delivers 90 percent of the screen area of iPhone 18 Pro. The Verge reported that the closed phone is a similar size to a passport and that the inner panel is the largest on any iPhone yet. Apple said the software experience is built for how people can use iPhone Duo. Apple said iPhone Duo will support Apple Pencil with USB-C later this year, allowing users to take notes, sketch, or mark up documents on either display. WIRED reported that the phone has no magnetic Pencil dock on its edges. Apple said the phone is available in star white and night sky.
iPhone Duo is Apple’s first foldable phone and a high-priced hardware bet in a still-small category. Independent reports also frame it as a first marquee device tied to Ternus’s leadership, which makes the launch a business story about succession as well as product strategy. A $1,999 starting price, reported by multiple outlets, places the device among other book-style foldables.
