Anthropic plans to take the Claude maker public in November — later than many investors had expected — as leading AI executives urge a slower pace of capability releases, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the matter.
The company had been expected to stage a blockbuster offering as early as October, those people told the Journal. Some of Anthropic’s advisers said waiting until November would give the startup time to publish third-quarter financials that show a strong competitive position even after rival OpenAI launched its Astra model in September, the Journal reported.
Separately, Reuters reported that Anthropic could push its IPO until after the November U.S. midterm elections, according to two people familiar with the matter, and that the offering has already slipped from earlier plans; marketing had previously been expected to begin in mid-October at the earliest. The timing debate lands after CEO Dario Amodei’s Sept. 12 essay arguing the industry must slow how fast it improves model capabilities, and after OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said a 2026 IPO would be ill-advised amid AI safety concerns, Reuters reported.
